Our next meeting will be back at the Ohio Media School Cleveland Campus.Our host will
be Campus Director, Terry Grodin.Our program and dinner will be courtesy of Lawo.
When broadcasters swap CD’s, cart machines, turntables and audio consoles for PC-based digital playout, mixing & processing systems, we call that Virtual Radio. Our guest speaker Bill Bennett, Lawo’s Radio Applications lead in the U.S., who will describe virtualization in greater detail by outlining the real applications in use today. He’ll explore how broadcasters may now reap operational benefits and gains by capitalizing on I.T.’s investment in R&D and will discuss virtualization’s anticipated role in content creation and broadcast workflow in the future. A recent episode of This Week in Radio Tech (TWiRT) featured a Lawo presentation on this topic. How did they conduct their broadcast interview? Virtually, of course! The usual times apply, gather at 7pm with our business meeting to run at 7:30 and the program to follow that. Tours of the facility may be available after the program.

Our next meeting on Tuesday August 9th will be at
The Boneyard Sky Box Party room! They are located
at101 E Royalton Rd, Broadview Heights, OH 44147. We
will have our election meeting inside for a change. The
Chapter will provide a nice selection of wings, pizza, and a
soft drink for the ‘picnic’. We won’t have an official program
but we’ll hold the election for Chapter officers and
talk about future programs you’d like to see.
Slightly earlier times apply. We can start to gather at
6:30 pm with our meeting to go at 7:30.

From Blake Thompson – SBE CH70 Program Chair:

Our next meeting will be at the WJMO transmitter site located
near/behind the Babbit funeral home at 9350 Ridge Rd. in North
Royalton. The site has the expected long gravel road leading back to
the 4 distinctive Blaw-Knox towers. We’ll see and hear about the upgrades
recently completed on those cool old towers. It’s also the main
transmitter site for 98.6, WNCX, and WQAL, 104.1.
Our Chairman will talk about the Nautel NV & GV series HD
Transmitters used as mains and a backup for WQAL and the rest of
his broadcast chains. John can also show us the small scale disaster
recovery studios for the two FM stations.
Be sure to bring a chair for yourself and maybe an extra one or
folding table you found. We’ll have a picnic style event in July for a
change. The usual times apply. Gather at 7 pm with our meeting to go
at 7:30.

Our next meeting on Tuesday June 14th will be at the WZIP studios
located on the University of Akron Campus, in Kolbe Hall room
320.  You can spot Kolbe hall as it has a
grid microwave dish on the roof. Come on up to the 3rdfloor ( ground, 1,
2, 3) and we’ll have a nice retirement party and get to see a preview of
the upcoming documentary on the history of WAUP/WZIP that the
students have been working on. We have also changed out almost every
piece of gear at WZIP since our last meeting here. There’s new Axia
consoles, a new ENCO DAD automation system, and much more. We
will also have tours available of the HD TV Production studio we use for
training and Fox 8 uses as their Akron home. Parking is ‘free’ in the lots
shown, they are for students and faculty/staff but open in the evening
for us.

Our next meeting on Tuesday May 10th will be the
Telos Alliance HQ at 1241 Superior Ave, Cleveland,
OH 44114. They will have their annual NAB wrap-up
with a few interesting things they showed at the conference.
Telos joined with Nautel and Moseley in a
show floor demo of a composite FM codec called
μMPX, or “micro” MPX. The codec, which enables
high-quality MPX over a 320 kbps IP connection, is
intended for FM radio applications to transport highquality
multiplexed FM signals over relatively small
data pipes. We can also see the ‘G-Force’ version of
the Omnia 11 that Corny has spent the past 3 years
working on!

Our next meeting on Tuesday, March 8th will be at
Browns/First Energy Stadium starting at 7:00 pm in the
Club 46 venue. We need to know how many of you will be
able to attend so we can give them a list of all attendees for
stadium security. If you would like to attend the March
meeting please RSVP to me at   so we
can get the list to the stadium folks. Don’t delay! I have to
get the final number to them this Friday and this will be a
one-time event for us so plan to attend! The usual times
apply, gather at 7pm for our short meeting at 7:30 with the
program to follow.
